How it works

How poppd knows what you'll like

It learns how you rate, not how everyone rates. Here's what happens between your first ten ratings and a recommendation you can trust.

Your ratings

It starts with how you rate, not what's popular.

Every film you rate on the popcorn scale teaches poppd something. Not just "liked it" or "didn't", but how strongly, which genres, which eras, whether you finished it.

Ten ratings is enough to start. Fifty and it knows you well.

Calibrated to you

A strong match means something different for everyone.

Some people hand out Popcorn Perfection freely. Some almost never do. poppd notices.

It checks its own predictions against the films you've already rated and works out what a strong match means for you specifically. A generous rater and a harsh one both get predictions that match how they'd actually score the film.

Your people

It finds real people who rate like you.

poppd looks for users whose ratings line up with yours across the films you've both seen, and treats their opinions as evidence. When eighteen people with your taste loved a film you haven't seen, that counts for more than a million strangers liking it.

You'll see who agrees with you, and where you part ways.

poppdAI

Then poppdAI gives you a straight answer.

Open any film and ask Will I like it? poppdAI looks at the films you've loved and the ones you haven't, what your taste matches thought, and what it knows about the film itself: its tone, its pacing, who made it.

It tells you how you'd probably rate it, in your own popcorn levels, with two or three reasons in plain English. When it's guessing, it says so.

The reasons

Every match comes with its reasons.

No black box. Each recommendation shows why: the people who agreed, the films it reminds us of, the feel of it, and what poppdAI thinks.

If the reasons don't convince you, dismiss it. poppd learns from that too.

What it doesn't do

It doesn't pretend. A match score is a compatibility score, not a promise. Early on, with few ratings and few taste matches, poppd says so and asks you to rate a few more. And the ranking underneath is built from your ratings, people like you, and poppdAI. Every card shows its reasons.

Rate ten films. See what you're most likely to enjoy next.
